Opinion: A powerless Democratic Party is Obama’s real legacy

Share

To the editor: So now we have two election losers, Jill Stein of the Green Party and Democrat Hillary Clinton, resorting to a recount in Wisconsin. This will not change the outcome of the election. (“There are plenty of things to object to about the election. It being ‘rigged’ isn’t one of them,” editorial, Nov. 29)

After three weeks of disruptive and boorish behavior on our city streets, college campuses and other public venues, it’s time to realize that, whether one likes it or not, Donald Trump won this election and will become our 45th president.

The Democratic Party, the media and others who feel dismayed by the outcome of this election should spend their time reflecting on why they lost what was to be a sure victory for Clinton and the continuation of the “Obama legacy.” As it turns out, the decimation of the Democratic Party is the real Obama legacy — a Republican president, a Republican Congress and GOP control of most state governors, legislatures and other local bodies.

To the editor: Trump continues to clearly demonstrate how totally unfit he is to be president of the United States. He is still campaigning and continuing to sow doubt regarding the election with tweets and outright lies.

This behavior is clearly intended to create additional support for voter ID laws in order to further suppress turnout.

Imagine what the rest of the world must think of our treasured democracy, for which so many citizens have sacrificed so much. The right to vote and the integrity of the free democratic system are being undermined with lies by the next president of the United States. As President Obama said, “We’re the only advanced democracy in the world that makes it harder for people to vote.”

Welcome to the Banana Republic of Donald Trump, formerly known as the United States of America.
