Northridge’s Jenkins is injured in car accident

Cal State Northridge guard Josh Jenkins remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday after being injured in a single-car accident Saturday in which the driver was killed, the school announced.

Jenkins, the team’s point guard, is out of action indefinitely but could be released from the hospital soon, school spokesman Bob Vazquez said. California Hospital Medical Center spokeswoman Katreena Salgado said she did not have further information on Jenkins’ injuries.

“Obviously, we’re thankful that Josh is alive,” Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell said in a statement. “This is a big blow to our team at this point of the season, but more importantly he’s alive and we pray that he will have a speedy and full recovery.”

Jenkins was leading the Big West Conference in assists at 6.1 a game and was averaging 10.2 points a game.

Jenkins is the second key player Northridge has lost this season. The Matadors, 12-10 overall and 8-3 in conference play, have been without leading scorer Deon Tresvant since early January after his arrest in connection with an alleged theft at an electronics store.

Teammate Rob Haynes spoke with Jenkins on Sunday, the school said.

“I talked with Josh . . . and he was still feeling the effect from the medication. But he’s going to be all right,” Haynes said.
