* The matchup: Both teams stumbled to the regular-season finish line, but have been given new life in the postseason. The key to this series is which team can sustain the momentum it built last week. Fullerton lost 11 of its last 17 regular-season games and finished fifth in the Big West Conference, but got solid pitching from Wes Roemer and timely hitting from Clark Hardman, who batted .571 in three games as the Titans swept the San Diego Regional. The Bruins lost eight of their last 11 regular-season games and finished third in the Pacific 10 Conference before sweeping the Long Beach Regional with outstanding pitching performances by Tyson Brummett, Gavin Brooks and Tim Murphy. Fullerton won two of three games against UCLA in February

UC Irvine (43-15-1) vs. Wichita State (53-20)

* The matchup: The Anteaters made a name for themselves last week when they defeated Texas twice while sweeping the Round Rock Regional. Pitchers Scott Gorgen and Wes Etheridge threw complete games and first baseman Taylor Holiday batted .467 for the Anteaters, who have won 12 of their last 13 games. Irvine doesn’t have a lot of power -- only two players have more than five home runs -- but they have a lot of team speed. They rank No. 8 in the nation with 133 stolen bases. Wichita State has won 10 of its last 13 behind a deep pitching staff that ranks No. 2 in the nation with a 2.71 earned-run average. Freshman Anthony Capra (7-0) leads the way with a 1.64 ERA. On offense, the Shockers also like to run. They have six players who have reached double figures in stolen bases and 131 total.
