Injury is likely to keep USC’s Silas Redd out of Las Vegas Bowl

USC tailback Silas Redd is expected to sit out the Las Vegas Bowl because of a knee injury and tailback Tre Madden could be a game-time decision because of an ankle injury, interim Coach Clay Helton said Saturday.

Neither Redd nor Madden practiced as the Trojans resumed workouts after three days off for finals. USC plays Fresno State next Saturday.

Redd, a senior, led the Trojans in rushing in 2012 but suffered a left knee injury during spring practice.

He was sidelined for much of the first part of the season while recovering from surgeries. Redd performed well upon his return, but injured his right knee during the Trojans’ victory at California on Nov. 9.

Redd returned for the regular-season finale against UCLA and had 25 yards in five carries.

He has 376 yards and one touchdown in six games.

“Silas’ knee is probably worse than expected,” Helton said. “I don’t think he’s going to make it right now from what it sounds like.”

With Redd sidelined at the start of the season, Madden emerged as the top tailback. The third-year sophomore rushed for more than 100 yards in four of the first five games before suffering a hamstring injury. He sat out two of the next four games and has been slowed by a high-ankle sprain since his return.

Madden has rushed for a team-best 703 yards.

Third-year sophomore Javorius Allen, who has rushed for 699 yards and 12 touchdowns, is expected to start at tailback against Fresno State. Freshman Ty Isaac also will play and fullback Soma Vainuku also has played tailback this season.

Players and assistant coaches were not made available to the media Saturday.

Recruiting cycle

With several recruits on campus for official visits, and multipurpose standout Adoree’ Jackson of Gardena Serra High also in attendance, new Coach Steve Sarkisian and assistants Peter Sirmon, Johnny Nansen and Keith Heyward were at practice.

Sarkisian and receivers coach Tee Martin, who is being retained on Sarkisian’s staff, huddled with Jackson after the workout.

Asked whether it was strange to be practicing before potential players he is no longer charged with recruiting, Helton said the staff was “here to help any way that we can.”

“We know all these guys,” Helton said. “We’re here to help the Trojan family and do everything we can until not asked to do that anymore.”
