Now there’s really a ‘Don Mattingly Way,’ at least in Evansville, Ind.

Come on, how would you like to take a little Sunday drive along “Don Mattingly Way”?

It can now be done, though it will require you to find your way to Evansville, Ind. Hey, there’s a price to pay for everything in life.

The Evansville City Council voted Monday to rename a stretch of road that stretches by a baseball field where Mattingly used to play and then wraps around a park.

“It’s where I grew up over there,” Mattingly said. “I played Little League at that park. The stadium is Bosse Field, where the triple-A team (Evansville Triplets) played and we played our high school games. It’s a really cool stadium.”

Bosse Field was built in 1915 and is billed as the third-oldest ballpark still in use in the country, behind only Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1914). The ballpark was used for game scenes in the film “A League of Their Own.”

The street was previously called North Main Street.

Mattingly is the most famous baseball player in Evansville history.

“This is a great tribute to one of the greatest baseball players in MLB history who is an Evansville native,” Councilman Jonathan Weaver told NBC affiliate WFIE-TV. “What better way and place to do this than where he actually played baseball growing up.”

Mattingly seemed pleased by the council’s decision, if a tad embarrassed by his hometown’s move.

“It is kinda cool,” Mattingly said.
