Andrew Bynum, his hip still hurting, considers options

Share

Andrew Bynum limped around the locker room Wednesday, his bruised right hip causing him so much pain that he has considered getting a procedure.

For now, Bynum plans on resting his injury. If that doesn’t work, Bynum said, his next course of action could be getting a cortisone injection and having the bursa sac drained next week, maybe Monday.

“I’m thinking about it,” Bynum said. “But I’m not trying to sit out too much longer. So if that’s the only alternative, that’s something I’m looking into.”

Bynum missed his second consecutive game Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz. He also missed the game against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.

The pain won’t go away.

“I feel it every time I run,” Bynum said. “But when I walk on my toes, it’s a little less. But when you do a heel-strike, it’s right on there.”

Bynum injured his hip during the first quarter of Saturday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers; he didn’t play in the second half.

The Lakers don’t play again until Tuesday night at Staples Center against Golden State, giving Bynum more time to get his left knee healthier.

He had some swelling in the knee but it was gone before the game against Portland.

Bryant, Odom on USA team

When USA Basketball revealed the 27 players who will be in its 2010-2012 men’s national team program Wednesday, Kobe Bryant, who won Olympic gold in 2008, and Lamar Odom, who was a bronze medal winner in the 2004 Olympics, had been selected.

Bynum declined an invitation to play because he wants to rest his injuries and to get prepared for next season.

“We go deep into the playoffs and for me having so many injuries, I need that rest time,” Bynum said. “I do look forward to doing it, just not right now.”

Clippers second-year guard Eric Gordon also was selected for the program.

Bryant and Odom will have to give USA Basketball a three-year commitment before the Olympics are played in 2012 in London.

They also will practice this summer with the team in Las Vegas in preparation for the FIBA World Championships in Turkey Aug. 28-Sept. 12.

Pau Gasol, who won a gold medal with Spain in the European championships last summer and a silver medal with his native country in the 2008 Olympics, said he won’t play for the Spanish national team this summer.

Gasol has dealt with left and right hamstring injuries this season that forced him to miss games.

Because he hasn’t taken a summer off from international basketball since 2005, Gasol said he’ll “probably not play” this summer for Spain.

“The two injuries I had this year, the hamstrings, are a clear sign of muscle fatigue,” Gasol said. “So I’m taking things a little differently than I have in the past. My body is asking for the rest.

“My country understands it.”
