First a streak, then the draft for Pepperdine’s A.J. Puckett, who goes No. 67
The scouts started multiplying some time during Pepperdine right-hander A.J. Puckett’s 45 2/3 inning scoreless streak.
At first, it was just a handful. Then a dozen. Then a few dozen.
The Kansas City Royals, apparently, liked what they saw. The Royals selected Puckett in the second round with the No. 67 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft on Thursday.
Puckett went 9-3 in 14 starts this season for the Waves. He struck out 95 batters and walked 26 in 991/3 innings. His earned-run average was just 1.27.
His scoreless streak was the third longest in Division I history. His scoreless innings streak ended at 57 1/3.
The assignment for Puckett’s pick is $963,700.
