Left with not enough wiggle room

Ultra-marathoner Andrew Wells spent nearly 17 hours running 49 miles in temperatures that reached 15 below zero to win the Frozen Otter Ultra Trek last weekend in Wisconsin, but he will pay a heavy price: Two toes.

Wells, the only competitor to make it past the 40-mile mark in the scheduled 24-hour race, has severe frostbite on two toes and they will have to be amputated.

Wells, 27, said he never noticed frostbite had set in.

“My feet were obviously frozen, so I couldn’t feel them,” he said. “I thought my toes were OK.”

After learning amputation would be necessary, Wells brushed it off as a minor inconvenience.

“I can live a good life without toes,” he said.

For the price of two toes, Wells won a prize package that included energy drinks, gel flasks, adventure gear and a subscription to Trail Runner magazine.

Bottled up

The man accused of throwing the cup that sparked a 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans has been sentenced to 45 days in jail for drunken driving.

John Green, 42, was sentenced after pleading guilty to second-offense driving under the influence.

On Nov. 19, 2004, Ron Artest, then with the Pacers, charged into the stands after Green allegedly threw a cup at the player. Green was acquitted of throwing the cup, but was convicted in March 2006 of assault and battery for punching Artest and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

The great outdoors

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Phoenix Suns are planning to play the NBA’s first outdoor game at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden during the exhibition season next October.

The 16,100-seat stadium has 44 luxury suites and is similar in size with many NBA arenas, minus the roof.

The Suns would be responsible for providing the court surface, scoreboards and video boards, and they plan to hold the game at night.

“NBA fans might see the Suns and the moon at once,” Coro wrote.

Game face

Duke guard Jon Scheyer is attracting attention for the facial expressions he makes on the court. He raises and lowers his eyebrows, opens and closes his mouth and otherwise contorts his face in a variety of expressions almost every time he touches the ball.

“I don’t know where he gets it from -- like Michael Jordan sticking his tongue out,” teammate Gerald Henderson said.

“It’s hard not to notice all the posters they hold up,” Scheyer said of opponents’ fans. “That’s my thing, I guess. Honestly, I can’t believe the amount of time it takes to make those things.”

And finally

The New Jersey Devils gave up three goals in the third period of a 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in their final game before the All-Star break, and that didn’t sit well with Coach Brent Sutter.

“Their play was brutal,” Sutter said. “They already had their plans to head to Vegas or wherever the hell they’re going before the game was half over.”
