Tim Pernetti gets $1.2 million and more after Rutgers resignation

Tim Pernetti resigned as the Rutgers athletic director last week in the aftermath of the Mike Rice men’s basketball scandal.

But he’s not walking away empty-handed.

Under the settlement agreement he reached with the university, Pernetti will receive nearly $1.2 million in salary in the next month even if he takes another job. That includes his base salary of $453,000 per year through June 2014 and a one-time payment of $679,000.

And that’s not all. The former athletic director will keep receiving his $12,000 per year car allowance through June 2014 and health insurance and pension payments through October 2015.

And he gets to keep his university-issued iPad and laptop computer. Sure hope he learned his lesson.

The Associated Press obtained details of the settlement on Monday.

Pernetti’s resignation came days after a video showing former coach Rice’s abusive behavior toward his players was aired on ESPN. Pernetti initially saw the video late last year, but rather than fire Rice, Pernetti fined him, suspended him for three games and ordered him to attend anger management classes.

Rice was fired last week, the day after the network showed the video of him kicking, shoving and throwing basketballs at players and also using anti-gay slurs. Under his contract, he is still in line to be paid just over $1 million plus $100,000 for staying with the team through the 2012-13 season.
