It's the beaches. No, wait, it's the scenery. Nope, it's the weather. No, it's the people. Or the vibe. Or... Whatever it is, Hawaii has that certain something that keep visitors coming back. Here is a collection of 100 of our favorite shots from Los Angeles Times staffers guaranteed to impart a little of that aloha spirit.

We took a trip last year to shoot some new photos and virtual tours for Destination360 and loved how they turned out. Haleakala Crater in Maui was a new thing to do, but we also spent plenty of time down at the beaches and attended a luau as well. We've never found Hawaii to be overrated, as a couple of other commenters said, but perhaps it depends on where you stay and what you expect when you get there. Though the volcanic rock means there are many beaches that are rough on your feet, there are some lovely sandy ones as well, and we had a terrific time relaxing in the sun and snorkeling there.
I have been to Oahu and Kauai. Word of caution: Kauai is for lovers. Seriously, the island pretty much closes down after 7pm and not a whole lot to do. I went with my sister and played ALOT of Scrabble in the room!
I preferred Oahu because of its nightlife. I am not a partier but when on vacation, I want to step outside of my "norm". Lots to do at night in Oahu! The Polynesian Culture Center is phenomonal!
Everyone should go to Hawaii at least once in their lives. It is magickal in many ways.
These pictures are all great. If it weren't for the fact that I've been to Hawaii I'd be tempted to go, but my experience going to Hawaii is that it is over rated. Most of the beaches aren't sand but sharp coral. I do remember snorkling so close to bright colored fish that I thought I could touch them, but I think that my wife's expectations were too high. As soon as we arrived someone handed us a brochure claiming the "best beach in the world" so as soon as I get there with my family, my wife says "Next time can you take me to Cancun". Pissed me off cause we hadn't been there 1 day and she's already starting...
