Daily Deal: Camarillo bird museum hosts free open house
The bird museum in Camarillo may be little known, but it houses a vast collection of all things avian, including 225,000 sets of bird eggs from about 4,000 bird species and 18,000 bird nests. The museum has invited the public to take a tour Saturday during a free open house.
The deal: The nonprofit Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology, as it’s more formally known, works to preserve ornithology collections for research, education and conservation efforts involving birds worldwide.
The one-day event, now in its 11th year, allows visitors to tour the collection of eggs and nests as well as thousands of bird specimens. It also will feature live birds of prey from the nearby Ojai Raptor Center from noon to 2 p.m. and demonstrations by experts to explain how they prepare museum specimens from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
When: The museum is open to visitors 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
Details: During the open house, Mamoru Suzuki, an artist who has been visiting the museum since the 1990s to draw and paint some of the bird eggs and nest materials, will be signing his book “Birds’ Nests of the World.”
