Share

Welcome to another edition of In the Loop, the Los Angeles Times' theme park newsletter. I'm Funland theme park blogger Brady MacDonald, and this week we take a look at SeaWorld's continuing woes, swing into Disneyland with Spider-Man, check out the stars at Universal's Horror Nights and sample everything on the menu at Epcot's food festival.

SeaWorld San Diego

The California Coastal Commission approves SeaWorld San Diego’s plan to expand its killer whale tanks with conditions that would bar the marine park from breeding or transferring orcas in the future.

But can the state agency tell SeaWorld what to do with its orcas?

Here’s a great overview of the story so far and a look at what the ban means for SeaWorld.

The twice-a-day killer whale shows are by far the biggest attraction at SeaWorld San Diego. Above, the crowd reacts to a trained orca at the park’s Shamu Stadium in 2014.

Hugo Martin, who covers theme parks for The Times' Business section, takes a look at SeaWorld’s options.

The Times Editorial Board weighs in and says the Coastal Commission went too far.

The California Coastal Commission voted Thursday to end captive orca breeding and restrict the movement of whales in and out of SeaWorld San Diego.

Meanwhile, ''Jackass'' star Steve-O gets jail time for his over-the-top protest against SeaWorld.

Swinging into Disneyland

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will join Iron Man, Thor and other Marvel superheroes starting Nov. 16 at Disneyland’s Super Hero HQ.

Spider-Man was created in the comic books of Stan Lee, shown in 2002. Spider-Man will appear at Disneyland's new attraction, Super Hero HQ, in Tomorrowland starting Nov. 16.

Lego Movie

A 4-D film with a new story based on “The Lego Movie” debuts in early 2016 at Legoland California, Legoland Florida and other Legoland parks around the world.

Food festival

Ever wonder what it would cost to eat everything at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in Florida? Me neither. The Orlando Sentinel finds out. And, no, they don’t drink all the wine.

Horror Nights

Pop singer Justin Bieber and “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star Kourtney Kardashian drop by Universal Studios Hollywood together to check out Halloween Horror Nights.

And finally

Want to buy an old amusement park? Ohio's Chippewa Lake Park, which closed in 1978, is on the market for $3.7 million.
