Conductor Gustavo Dudamel and his wife, Eloísa Maturén, are the proud parents of a baby boy, Martín Dudamel Maturén. Eloísa Maturén gave birth Friday at 9:39 p.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to Deborah Borda, president of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The baby weighed in at 6 pounds, 13 ounces.
Mother and baby are doing fine, Borda said. Martín is the first child for the Dudamels, who married in 2006. (Dudamel first announced his wife’s pregnancy in October.) Maturén is a former ballet dancer and journalist who often travels with her husband to his concert engagements around the world.
The fact that baby Martín was born in L.A. makes him a U.S. citizen. It remains unclear if the Dudamels will raise their son primarily in L.A. or in Dudamel’s native Venezuela.
As Times music critic Mark Swed reported, Dudamel was unable to conduct at Tuesday’s concert honoring the late Ernest Fleischmann because it was the day his baby was due. (Dudamel did, however, put in an appearance at the end of the concert, briefly addressing the audience at Walt Disney Concert Hall.)
The conductor’s next scheduled appearances at Disney Hall will begin May 5, leading the orchestra in its series devoted to the music of Brahms.
Dudamel, 30, and his wife have a home in Beachwood Canyon, though they are often traveling around the world. The conductor also holds top conducting positions with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in Caracas, Venezuela, and the Gothenburg Symphony in Sweden.
