Michael Mina’s SBE restaurant XIV, which opened to much hype nearly two years ago, has gone through some growing pains but is finally catching its stride. Early on its shared small-plates concept was a bit difficult for diners to get the hang of, and then the recession hit full force and its price was a bit too steep.
Now the restaurant announces that it will be offering a $40, three-course prix-fixe menu as a regular option for diners. The deal was previously only available during dineLA restaurant week. In addition, Mina and executive chef Steven Fretz have been working to reduce the overall price point of the XIV dining experience by reworking the menu to offer more items cooked over an open wood fire, as well as by adding a variety of fresh, seasonal dishes.
A rep for XIV says that check totals have already gone down by 25% but stresses that chef Fretz is convinced that the quality of the food is even better than before.
Right now the $40 prix-fixe menu includes a choice of appetizer (summer truffle cavatelli, Caesar salad or lobster-grilled cheese dip); an entree (grilled Tasmanian salmon with broccoli rabe, white soy vinaigrette and crispy ginger; a Kobe burger with farmhouse cheddar cheese and balsamic onions; or Japanese jidori chicken with corn spaetzle and leeks); and a dessert (mascarpone mousse tiramisu or root beer float with warm chocolate chip cookies).
