HIGH-COST HYBRIDS: A recently released audit on take-home cars assigned to Los Angeles elected officials revealed that the fleet consisted mostly of hybrids. While these vehicles are environmentally friendly, they come at a high price, as seen by L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s 2009 GMC Yukon hybrid SUV, costing around $51,870.
WHALE WARFARE CONTINUES: No compromise has yet been made on the issue of whale hunting in Antarctica. Japan has rejected a proposal made by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) that would have ended Japan’s whaling in the Antarctic but allowed it to continue whaling in its own coastal waters. Japan intends to continue ‘research hunting,’ while the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society sends its flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, to thwart Japan’s factory whaling ships in Antarctica.
