A Los Angeles County sheriff’s jailer was arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting inmates and falsifying police reports afterward, authorities said.

The arrest followed a months-long internal sheriff’s investigation that authorities said showed that Jermaine Jackson, a five-year veteran of the department, assaulted two inmates using “a deadly weapon” -- his feet.

At least one of the attacks was caught on tape, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The arrest comes as the FBI is in the midst of a larger investigation of deputy abuse and other misconduct in the L.A. County jail system. This arrest, however, resulted from an internal Sheriff’s Department probe.

Jackson, 35 of Corona, was charged with assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, assault by a public officer and filing a false report in connection with two separate incidents, according to the district attorney’s office.

One of the alleged assaults was on Cesar Campana, an inmate at the Compton courthouse lockup, in December 2009. The other was on Christmas Day 2010 on Derek Griscavage, an inmate at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.

The deputy is being booked into the jail system he once policed on $100,000 bail, officials said. According to one sheriff’s official familiar with the case, who asked to remain anonymous because the investigation is ongoing, Jackson was known to some within the department by the nickname “Action Jackson.”

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said Jackson had been put on leave several months ago, and is on leave without pay now that he’s been arrested. He has not entered a plea.

“The sheriff is taking this very seriously and we are the ones that investigated this,” Whitmore said. “We are the ones who arrested this guy.”

Whitmore said that the incidents were isolated and that no other employees were involved.
