Crews worked Friday to restore power to about 29,000 customers in the Huntington Park area, said Dan Chung, a Southern California Edison spokesman.

Lightning is suspected of causing the outage, Chung said. Just before 10 a.m. Friday, Huntington Park experienced a “series of lightning strikes,” he said.

Chung said it is likely an SCE substation in Huntington Park was struck by lightning since such a large number of people lost power.

Power outages have been reported in Bell, Bell Gardens, South Gate and parts of Los Angeles, though the majority are in Huntington Park, Chung said.

“Anybody in and around where there are lightning strikes should stay safe,” Chung said. “People should never approach a downed power line or anything that’s attached to a downed power line and should call 911 immediately.”
