Tedd Wenrick of Santa Monica took this unexpected close-up in early July while driving through Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The photo is featured this week in Travel.
Here’s the story behind Wenrick’s shot: Wenrick’s friend, Jeanne Shoemaker, was driving when the donkey walked right up to the car and stuck in its head. Though known for having one of the largest buffalo herds in the U.S., Custer State Park is also home to a variety of other wildlife, especially wild donkeys. Wenrick used a Canon EOS 30D.
