Interesting piece in today’s L.A.Times about the land rush that never happened in the desert near the Salton Sea.

In Salton City, population 1,440, there are 250 houses for sale. The Times’ David Streitfeld: ‘Builders figured that people priced out of Los Angeles and San Diego would discover Salton City and the other towns in Imperial County.... That assumption appears premature at best. Imperial County, at least for the moment, seems a subdivision too far.’

Best description of the place: ‘This place is a little nutty, a little out there,’ says real estate agent Aimee Sisco. ‘But you can’t get any cheaper. It’s actually a place that people can afford to live.’

Prices are cheap for the region, but not dirt cheap: $355,000 for a new four-bedroom in the ‘Ranch’ development.
