Market research company Packaged Facts estimates that U.S. sales of salty snacks grew 12.5% to $8.1 billion from 2004 to 2008.

That compares with a 7.6% gain to $7.1 billion for candy, the cross-the-aisle archrival of salty snacks, during the same period. The candy figure includes chocolate and nonchocolate treats.
