South Carolina governor’s ex-wife to campaign for his potential successor

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s ex-wife is campaigning this week for a gubernatorial candidate who has distanced herself from Sanford since he revealed his extramarital affair.

Jenny Sanford also will be on the “Dr. Phil” show Thursday. The next day she will campaign for state Rep. Nikki Haley, a Republican from Lexington.

On Wednesday, the governor confirmed he was in Florida with Maria Belen Chapur last weekend. Although he didn’t identify the Argentine woman with whom he had a yearlong affair, Sanford made it clear he was trying to see if it was possible to restart a relationship with her.

Without the affair that wrecked his marriage and political future, the Republican governor probably would have been campaigning for Haley. But Haley has distanced herself from him since he confessed the affair.
