Teemu Selanne becomes top career Olympic scorer

Congratulations to Ducks winger Teemu Selanne, playing in his fifth Olympic hockey tournament for Finland at age 39 and now the leading scorer in Olympic play.

Selanne, still wearing a cage to protect his jaw a month after he broke it badly enough to require surgery, reached the milestone in the second period of Finland’s preliminary-round game against Germany on Friday night at Canada Hockey Place. Playing on the power play, he made a cross-ice pass to Sami Salo, who relayed the puck to Kimmo Timonen for a blast that snaked through a cluster of players in front of the net.

The assist was his 17th and the point was his 37th, breaking the record he had shared with Canada’s Harry Watson, Vlastimil Bubnik of the former Czechoslovakia and Valeri Kharlamov of Russia.

During the next stoppage, the public address announcer noted Selanne’s achievement, and the crowd responded with a warm round of applause.
