‘The Voice’ grows louder in week two, giving NBC the ratings hit it needs

With ‘The Voice,’ it looks like NBC has finally gotten the hit it desperately needs.

The second week of the singing competition delivered an average of 12.4 million total viewers from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., up 5% from last week’s impressive premiere, according to the Nielsen Co.


‘The Voice’ thus becomes the only new series on any of the major networks this season to deliver a bump from the first to second episode, usually a reliable indicator of hit status.

Best of all for long-suffering NBC, ‘The Voice’ is showing its strongest numbers among young adults. In the key advertising category of adults age 18 to 49, Tuesday’s airing scored a 5.6 rating/14 share, making it the night’s top-rated show. It easily swept past ‘Glee,’ which delivered a 3.6 rating/10 share at 8 p.m.

Last week’s premiere of ‘The Voice’ had a median viewer age of 40.6 -- which might not sound all that youthful, but is compared with much of the competition on TV, especially crime shows.
