James Arness, America’s brawling TV cowboy, has died.

The actor, best known for playing Marshal Matt Dillon in the long-running TV western series “Gunsmoke,’ died Friday of natural causes at his home in Brentwood. He was 88.

“Gunsmoke” debuted on CBS in 1955 and helped usher in the adult western, along with “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” on ABC.

Speaking about his character, Arness once said: ‘Matt is very human and has all the failings and drives common to anyone who is trying to do a difficult job the best he knows how.’
