Wake-up call: Mike Singletary, LenDale White, Patti LaBelle

First things first: The 49ers’ Mike Singletary’spostgame performance is the talk of the morning. If anyone can get this team to execute, new head coach Singletary will do it after the players hear what he said. And I do mean hear. Dan Patrick was right when he said this morning that Singletary sounded like Samuel L. Jackson in ‘Pulp Fiction’ (remember the Ezekiel speech?) after the 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks, 34-13. I don’t think Singletary was trying to sound tough. I think he simply is tough. Said Singletary: ‘... It will change and it will change ... because they want to be champions. ... Our formula is this: We go out and hit people in the mouth, No. 1. No. 2, we are not a charity. We cannot give them the game. That’s No. 2. And No. 3 is we execute, from the very start of the game to the very end of the game. That did not happen ...’ Hear it here:

Add NFL: LenDale White is the man to watch in tonight’s Monday Night Football game, when his Tennessee Titansplay host to the Indianapolis Colts. Largely overshadowed by offensive stars Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart during their days at USC, White is now in a better position than both of them. Writes The Times’ Sam Farmer:While Leinart languishes on Arizona’s bench, and Bush nurses a knee injury in New Orleans, White is a key component on the NFL’s only undefeated team.’ The game begins at 5:30 Pacific time on ESPN.

Baseball tonight: Saturday was a great day for sports on television. But I’m still wondering why they played Game 3 of the World Series on a wet field? It’s not like they were out to get ratings. Thanks to the rain delay, by the time it finally ended, most people on the East Coast were no doubt asleep. And it was on a night when the Phillies-Rays contest was going up against the most talked-about college football game: Ohio State-Penn State. And then up against USC-Arizona, not to mention the Ducks game, which was shown locally. And now Game 5 is tonight, and the Phillies can win it all. How many of you saw that Game 3 all the way through? And how many were flipping back and forth? It did hit a ratings record low. The game begins at 5:30 tonight on Channel 11. And once again goes up against what is expected to be a highly watched football game.

Add baseball: Patti LaBelle’s rendition of the national anthem ahead of Game 4 of the World series was stunning. I loved it. But then I love Labelle. The Times’ Ann Powers recently took a lookat where LaBelle is these days, career-wise. Who cares how long her rendition was? After the length of Game 3, it seemed fine to stop and appreciate a voice like that. It was better than Taylor Swift’srendition on Saturday night, and Swift’s acoustic version was terrific -- so different it rated a ‘wow’ from Fox play-by-play man Joe Buck.

Stop the mustard throwing: There is a lot of talk about Phillies fans not being nice. And that includes a comment from Rays’ manager Joe Maddon complaining about how his granddaughter was pelted with packs of mustard. Nice. I wonder what these fans do when they are losing?
