The Angels and Dodgers are among the top five teams in Major League Baseball ... at least in terms of the players’ average annual salaries.

Figures released today by the MLB Players Assn. show the average major league salary for 2008 was $2.93 million. That is a 3.6% increase over a year ago, but also is the smallest year-to-year increase since 2004.

Not surprisingly, the New York Yankees easily topped the list with a $6.86-million average salary, followed by the Chicago Cubs at $4.68 million, the Angels at $4.37 million, the Chicago White Sox at $4.5 million and the Dodgers at $4.37.

Now, things could change if the Dodgers can somehow manage to hold onto Manny Ramirez and actually have to pay his contract next season.
