CHICAGO -- The Red Wings cut the Blackhawks’ lead to 3-2 on Jiri Hudler’s goal 1:14 into the second period. Goalie Cristobal Huet was down when Hudler beat him, the Czech forward’s 14th goal this season.

The crowd seems quieter. Has the novelty worn off a bit, or have they just become numb from the cold? The flags above the wonderful, old, hand-operated scoreboard are blowing briskly toward left field, and the flags along each baseline are fluttering wildly too.

Maybe they knew what was going to happen to the Blackhawks in the second period. The Red Wings pulled even at 12:43 and surged ahead, 4-3, at 17:17 on a wonderful goal by Pavel Datsyuk. Going in on a one-on-two, he got past Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell and slid the puck between Huet’s leg pads.
