Shane Loux starts for the Angels today against the Milwaukee Brewers. Loux, Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart and Anthony Ortega are the candidates for the fifth starter’s job.

Moseley and Adenhart each are scheduled to pitch Sunday. Ortega is not scheduled to pitch any time soon; Manager Mike Scioscia said Ortega reported to camp with a ‘tired arm’ after winter ball. Ortega is limited to playing catch and has not yet thrown off a mound.

The Angels’ late signing of Bobby Abreu appeared to anchor Chone Figgins at third base, leaving Brandon Wood with nowhere to play. But Scioscia said Wood, long touted as the Angels’ top prospect among position players, could hit his way onto the team, even in a reserve role. Wood can play shortstop as well as third base, Figgins can play second base and the outfield as well, and the designated hitter spot could be available on some days.

‘Brandon is versatile enough,’ Scioscia said. ‘If he’s swinging the bat, he could carve a role for himself.’
