With his playing time so limited, the Lakers have finally decided to send rookie Sun Yue to play for the team’s NBA Development League team.

Sun will play when the D-Fenders host Anaheim today at 3:30 p.m. at Staples Center.

He played in just 10 games this season for the Lakers, scoring a total of six points. He averaged just 2.8 minutes per game and shot 27.3% from the floor.

Sun had been opposed to going to the D-League earlier this season, but Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said today that this is a great opportunity for the guard to play.

‘I am impressed with Sun’s basketball talents and am hopeful that he will play for the Lakers for many years to come,’’ Jackson said.

It’s possible that Sun will get called up after the game, similar to what happened to Lakers rookie Jordan Farmar when he played for the D-Fenders.

A player can be assigned to the D-League during his first two seasons in the NBA. He can be assigned up to three times per season and will continue to be paid his NBA salary.
