No team in America was under more pressure to win this weekend than America’s Team, and Notre Dame answered the cathedral bell with a thoroughly, almost shocking, 35-0 win over Nevada. Some of us saw this as a close game, with a potential upset chance. Last year, remember, San Diego State came within an inch of beating the Irish in the opener at South Bend. You figured the Irish were going to score points on Nevada, which ranked 91st nationally in defense last year. The shocking part was Notre Dame’s defense pitching a shutout against Nevada, which was returning three 1,000-yard rushers and averaged 37.6 points per game in 2008. It was the Irish’s first shutout since 2002 and the first in the Charlie Weis era. So, is the heat finally off Weis? Not quite. Notre Dame returns this week to Michigan where, two years ago, the Irish lost, 38-0. Weis had better win that won, too.
