Heatley won’t face Kings Thursday

Dany Heatley, acquired by San Jose from Ottawa last week, won’t be in uniform when the Sharks face the Kings Thursday in an exhibition at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Heatley had to wait at home in Canada until he got a work permit to enter the United States, and the red tape was only recently untangled. He’s expected to arrive in San Jose Thursday night and appear at a news conference there on Friday.

Heatley will certainly boost the Sharks’ offense, especially if he’s on the left side with Joe Thornton, as expected. But the Sharks’ real problem last season was a lack of guts and heart, and Heatley--with two trade demands behind him and questions about his attitude dogging him--may not be the man to solve it.

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
