Who would have guessed?

The Kings plan to introduce their signature TV advertisement for the season on Sunday at noon on their website, www.lakings.com. A preview teaser is available at www.LAKings.com/teaser09. The spot will feature a number of players, including Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Rob Scuderi.

Its title--hold your breath--is ‘Pride=Passion=Power...We’re Here to Play Hockey.’

That last part is comforting: they’ve finally figured that out.

And it’s better than the slogan they used a few years ago, ‘Kings Rule.’

But what were they here to do the past, oh, five years, if not to play hockey?

Bowl?

Audition for ‘Dancing with the Stars’?

At some point, someone connected with the Kings will realize that their best marketing tool is a winning team that’s fun to watch. Until then, we’ll have to settle for being happy that they at least know why they’re here.

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist. She became the first female journalist to be honored with a plaque in the Hall of Fame of a major professional sport as the 2005 winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Elmer Ferguson Award, awarded to writers “who have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.” A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she has covered 18 Olympics.
