It sounds strange to say and even write, but the Lakers had to hold on for the victory.

They once led by 25 points in the fourth, but the lead was cut to eight points late in the fourth before the Lakers won their fourth straight game.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 34 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Third quarter: Lakers 83, Knicks 62

The Lakers went on a 17-0 run to extend their lead to 24 points.

All five Laker starters had scored in double figures by the end of the third quarter.

Kobe Bryant led the way with 30 points on 13-for-30 shooting.

Second quarter: Lakers 55, Knicks 45

After falling behind by one point in the second quarter, the Lakers opened an 11-point lead.

They settled into a 55-45 halftime lead over the New York Knicks on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant had 17 first-half points for the Lakers.

First quarter: Lakers 30, Knicks 24

Lakers center Andrew Bynum scored 10 points in the first quarter to help the Lakers open a six-point lead.

Bynum missed just one of his six shots.

Kobe Bryant had eight points on four-for-six shooting.

The Lakers made 56.5% of their shots in the first quarter.

Even though the Lakers entered Tuesday night’s game with a 10-3 record and the Knicks were 3-10, Los Angeles was not looking past New York. Lakers Coach Phil Jackson warned his team that the Knicks have been playing better basketball.

Jackson told his team to take the game seriously.
