There has not been a rainout at Angel Stadium since 1995, but the tarp is on the field this afternoon. A light rain has been falling since 4 p.m. -- it’s just before 5 p.m. as of this writing -- and batting practice has been canceled.

The Angels still expect to play tonight’s game against the Detroit Tigers, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. The forecast as of 5 p.m. calls for clearing skies by game time, with a chance of showers later in the evening.

Wednesday’s game could be in greater jeopardy, with a forecast for Wednesday calling for showers all evening and thundershowers at times. Showers also are in Thursday’s forecast, and any rainout would cause scheduling difficulties, because the Tigers are not scheduled to return to Anaheim this season.

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said he would prefer to avoid a doubleheader if possible. The Tigers make their only other West Coast visit in May, and a makeup game could be scheduled on Thursday, May 27, which is an off day for both teams.

The Angels have had 10 rainouts in Anaheim, the last coming June 16, 1995, against the Chicago White Sox.
