The executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission said Friday that the commission on July 26 will determine whether to alter former world champion Kermit Cintron’s accident-shortened super-welterweight loss this month to Paul Williams.

Williams won a technical split-decision over Cintron after Cintron’s got his legs tangled up with Williams and suddenly charged forward through the ropes and out of the ring, sustaining pain that brought an end to the fight less than midway through the fourth round.

California rules allowed the bout to be sent to the scorecards, and although two judges clashed by each awarding the other fighter all four rounds, another judge gave Williams a 3-to-1 edge, making him the winner.

Cintron’s promoter, Lou DiBella, upset that his fighter wasn’t given more time to recover from apparent back pain and outraged that a winner was declared so early in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds, appealed to the commission to have Cintron’s defeat declared a no-contest.

Williams’ promoter, Dan Goossen, is appealing to have the victory recorded as a technical knockout because Cintron refused to continue fighting.
