UCLA forward Travis Wear, the Bruins’ second-leading scorer (10.6 points a game), will miss Wednesday’s game against Eastern Washington because of a skin infection in his left foot, a team spokesman said.
Wear practiced the past two days, so the nature of the infection is unclear.
[Update 7:11 p.m.: Wear was taken to a hospital on Tuesday night and he’s expected to stay there Wednesday night as a precaution, the spokesman said. Wear has taken antibiotics and the infection has responded well. He’s expected to be released from the hospital Thursday and he’s listed as game-to-game. UCLA faces UC Irvine on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
While doctors didn’t state that the infection was related to Wear’s snorkeling accident in Maui on Nov. 25, the infection is on the same toe on the same foot, the spokesman said.
The 6-foot-10 sophomore cut his left foot then -- not his right foot, as was originally reported -- during the team’s trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational and the wound required five stitches.]
Without Wear and 6-9 junior forward Reeves Nelson, who was dismissed from the team Dec. 9, the 3-5 Bruins’ once-vaunted front line will appear much thinner against the Eagles (5-4).
