Can’t make it in person to the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in New York City? Organizers have launched a smart-phone app that will help approximate the experience.

The free app for Apple and Android mobile users, from the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, will stream more than six hours of the festivities live. It won’t be quite the same as being there for the collective fist pump led by the ‘Jersey Shore’ cast, but hey, can’t win ‘em all.

And a bonus: App users can submit photos to a vote. The most popular images will appear on a digital billboard directly beneath the Times Square ball.

Some other New Year apps:

Bumping together two iPhones equipped with the free Waterford Crystal Clink-Clink! app helps transfer contact information and also shares prewritten toasts. There’s also a crisp clinking sound for party-goers without goblets to tap.

As if real vuvuzelas weren’t enough, the New Years Noise Maker app turns iPhones into cowbells, party horns, whistles and more when shaken.
