Something shocking is about to happen in California politics this weekend.

A presidential candidate will visit Pasadena, not for a fundraiser, but to speak in a church. No, really.

Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a former House member who took over Bob Dole’s Senate seat in 1996, is scheduled to speak Sunday morning at the 11 a.m. service of Harvest Rock Church in the Ambassador Auditorium at 131 S. St. John Ave.

Brownback, like many of the presidential candidates, spent most of this past week campaigning across Iowa, where like all the second-tier Republican candidates, he hopes to do well in the August Ames straw poll against Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain say they will not participate in the symbolically important but expensive straw poll.

Brownback is appealing mainly to the conservative Republican crowd and published a new book this week, ‘Power to Purpose: A Remarkable Journey of Faith and Compassion,’ available on his campaign website.
