You can always count on Orange County schools to exert themselves on the Southland, state and national water polo scene. As boys’ water polo gets underway, it looks like El Toro opens with a bullseye on it. The Chargers are the top-ranked Division I team in the Southern Section rankings, followed by Newport Harbor, Northwood and Los Alamitos. Loyola, at No. 5, is the highest-ranked non-county school. Foothill is all the way down at No. 7, which I find kind of surprising. In Division II, Villa Park, Servite and Mater Dei are 1-2-3.

There’s a great note about Bolsa Grande in the OC Register: The Matadores haven’t won a league title since 1986 but are this year’s favorites, and among the top 10 teams in Division VI.

Of really big news to the OC crowd is that this year’s Southern Section division finals will be played in Irvine instead of Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. It will be at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, which is otherwise known as Irvine High’s pool.
