Plenty of spine-tingling action from Inland Empire athletic programs over the weekend, but probably the most impressive came from the Murrieta Valley boys’ cross-country team.

The Nighthawks finished first in the team competition Saturday night in the boys’ sweepstakes race at the Irvine Woodbridge Invitational, totaling 146 points. David McCutcheon led the way, finishing fifth overall on the three-mile course in 14 minutes 33 seconds.

Murrieta Valley came into the event ranked No. 8 in Southern Section Division I but should improve based on its performance.

The highlight of the meet came from Christine Babcock of Woodbridge, a two-time state champion in track and field and a defending state champion in cross-country. Babock ripped through the girls’ sweepstakes race in 16:05, breaking her course record by 26 seconds.

If you get a chance, check out Babcock in person. You’ll likely be watching a future Olympic distance runner.
