Chino Hills is starting on defense here at Tesoro High School, which offers a rare glimpse of the natural terrain that once made up much of southeastern Orange County before the developers arrived like cockroaches. Anyone remember Escape Country, the motocross park that was bulldozed over about 30 years ago to make room for a gated community near here?

Anyway, it’s a crisp, clear evening with the stands about three-quarters full on both sides. I talked to some Mission Viejo coaches on the way in, but they didn’t have much to say. The Diablos will probably beat Tesoro by five touchdowns in South Coast League play, so they might as well leave at halftime.

Tesoro had a nice kickoff return to the Chino Hills 40 before taking a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard run three minutes into the game.
