Linebacker Donovan Carter, who has committed to UCLA, is the early standout for Birmingham, which is holding a 7-0 lead over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame with 5:19 left in the second quarter.

He dropped running back Thaddeus Brown for a loss on third and one to stop a Notre Dame drive, and twice he has tackled quarterback Dayne Crist.

Notre Dame has had three possessions, and the last one the Knights took to the Birmingham 28, where they went for a first down on fourth down. In past years, with kickers such as Kai Forbath (UCLA) and Erik Folk (Washington), Notre Dame would have tried a field goal. This is the first year in quit a while that the Knights don’t have a Pac-10 quality kicker.
