The public-address announcer here at Veterans Stadium gave props to the Carson spirit squad just before halftime, encouraging the crowd to give them a hand and complimenting the cheerleaders on their routines.

It was more than he could do for the Carson players, who went into halftime trailing Long Beach Poly, 17-0.

Things went from bad to worse for the Colts after that.

Poly junior running back Melvin Richardson ran for one touchdown of about 32 yards with just under 10 minutes left in the third quarter, then scored again on a 19-yard run with 5:35 to go in the quarter.

With Poly leading, 31-0, senior Jurrell Casey put one more nail in Carson’s coffin. He picked up a fumble near midfield and returned it for a touchdown that, combined with another Jonathan Heinze point-after kick, gave Poly a 38-0 advantage with four seconds to play in the third quarter.
