That nasty losing streak is finally over

A couple days ago, I wrote Thursday’s game against Channel Islands would be the last real chance Calabasas had at avoiding what has to be one of the state’s more infamous prep football records.

The Coyotes entered the contest only three losses shy of breaking Moorpark’s state record of 46 consecutive losses (1977-82) and I (and some other people) knew their best chance to snap the streak would be against a team that hadn’t scored a single point in its previous four games.

Well, the Coyotes finally numbed the pain of their 44-game losing streak with a 28-14 victory over the Raiders. It was Calabasas’ first win since its 28-21 triumph over Newbury Park on Nov. 1, 2002 and it probably marked the first time rookie Coach Lance Martin could breathe easily in a post-game interview.

Some folks were saying Calabasas was the favorite heading into this one, but I couldn’t bring myself to side with a team that had the third-longest losing streak in tow (I also thought Notre Dame would beat Birmingham by more than a TD, so what do I know?).

But Calabasas didn’t just inch past Channel Islands, it plowed its way through thanks to the efforts of QB Serop Chalian, who passed for 216 yards and two TDs, according to the Ventura County Star. It was a good showing and definitely a step in the right direction, but the Coyotes still have a long road ahead of them before the next celebration on the hill.
