As chants of ‘o-ver ra-ted’ bellowed from the Mater Dei student section, I sure am glad I moved Mater Dei back to No. 1 this week. The Monarchs proved to be the best high school football team in California tonight, easing away in the second half to beat Corona Centennial, 51-37, in the best matchup of top teams I’ve seen since Carson Palmer-led Santa Margarita and DeShaun Foster-led Tustin went head to head for a Southern Section title 10 years ago.

Tonight, Matt Barkley of Mater Dei was Carson Palmer and Ryan Bass of Centennial was DeShaun Foster.

The two-hour wait to get out of the Santa Ana Stadium parking structure is a small price to pay to have been here to witness this game.
