Marlborough and Viewpoint each have long histories of academic success. Now, the schools are showcasing their athletic prowess, too.

Marlborough snapped the three-year reign of Corona del Mar by winning the Commissioners Cup as the top girls’ athletic program in the Southern Section for the 2006-07 school year. Viewpoint won the award for the first time in recognition of its status as the top boys’ athletic program in the section.

Both schools earned top honors in tiebreakers. The titles are based on a points system applied to performances in Southern Section competition. Five points were awarded for each division title, three points for a divisional runner-up finish and two for advancing to playoff semifinals or finishing third in an individual sport like cross-country, golf, swimming or track and field. One point was awarded for fourth-place finishes.

Marlborough scored 20 points with Southern Section divisional championships in tennis, basketball, cross-country and track and field. Corona del Mar also had 20 points with titles in tennis, cross-country and track and field, along with a runner-up finish in volleyball and a semifinal showing in water polo, but the Mustangs were awarded the Commissioners Cup based on the number of championships won. Ayala finished third in the girls’ standings with 16 points.

Viewpoint scored 16 points by winning divisional titles in tennis and volleyball and with runner-up finishes in soccer and baseball. The Patriots finished ahead of Oaks Christian and Loyola in the Commissioners Cup standings. See the top 10 schools in boys’ and girls’ standings here.

Oaks Christian and Loyola each finished with 15 points, but Oaks Christian wound up second based on three championships won, compared to two for Loyola.
