David Ochs, boys’ athletic director at Rim of the World, said the Fighting Scots’ game Friday night at Sultana will not be played because of wildfires in the area.

‘We have kids coming home to just a chimney,’ Ochs said. ‘Others haven’t even seen it yet.’

Ochs, who lives in Lake Arrowhead near the village, said from his home Wednesday morning that the wind was non-existent and aircraft could be heard overhead fighting the fires. Still, he estimated a few hundred homes were lost between Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs.

He said he doesn’t expect the Mojave River League game against Sultana to be re-scheduled.

‘We host Apple Valley next week,’ he said. ‘That’s the soonest we can play football.’

Except for girls’ volleyball, athletic events elsewhere in Riverside and San Bernardino counties remain at a standstill.

Among the events postponed Tuesday was the Southwestern and Mountain View League boys’ water polo tournaments, the Citrus Belt and Southwestern League girls’ golf finals and a three-way Ivy League cross-country meet.
