I guess maybe the El Dorado girls’ volleyball team didn’t get the word that no athletics events were to be staged or attended by any Orange County public schools through the weekend.

I don’t rightly know -- because it’s nearly 1 a.m., I’ve been out on a football assignment and haven’t had a chance to actually contact the volleyball coach -- but the Golden Hawks, as well as Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita, both private schools not affected by the county superintendents’ pact, completed pool play Friday in the first day of the Redondo Power Classic.

Hm...well, let’s hope the athletic director, principal and other powers that be know where their, um, school children are.

And just for the record, El Dorado and the two Trinity League schools have advanced out of pool play and into the 26-team tournament’s championship division bracket.

Santa Margarita, which happens to be the defending tournament champion, defeated Gardena Serra and Torrance in pool play, while El Dorado beat Mary Star, Burbank Burroughs and Oxnard and Orange Lutheran defeated West Torrance, Azusa and La Canada.

Quarterfinals begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with Santa Margarita playing Burroughs, El Dorado going against Bakersfield Christian and Orange Lutheran playing Torrance.

Semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m., with the championship match to follow at approximately 2:30 at Redondo.

The tournament did lose La Habra, which pulled out Thursday, adhering to the Orange County no-play mandate. The event, which usually includes 32 teams, finally went off with 26 because five San Diego Section schools were also absent because of similar restrictions.
