Orange County girls’ volleyball: Newport Harbor wins showdown

Ranked Nos. 2 and 3 in the Southland in Southern Section Division I girls’ volleyball, Newport Harbor defeated Los Alamitos with a stunning three-game sweep of the Griffins.

Newport was ranked No. 3 in the section, behind Los Alamitos, but secured the Sunset League’s first-place entry into the playoffs should both teams win the rest of their matches and tie for the league title; Newport owns the tie-breaker -- games won.

Especially surprising was the disparity of the scores: Newport was victorious, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.

Mira Costa is ranked No. 1 in the division.
