I thought several league races within Ventura County would become more clear after Week 8, but alas, I was wrong. The only thing certain after Friday night is that there’s still plenty of uncertainty out there.

Then again, we are talking about high school football. I should know to always expect the unexpected. So, without further delay, let’s take a look at how things played out.

Stumbling block: Previously undefeated Newbury Park was in control of its own destiny in the Marmonte League, but lost to Moorpark, 19-13, and subsequently fell into a first place tie with Westlake. The Panthers can’t dwell on the loss though. They must regroup quickly for their regular-season finale against Thousand Oaks and emerging junior John Lister, who racked up 297 yards of total offense and scored five touchdowns for the Lancers in a 35-27 victory over Simi Valley.

It’s called the Tri-Valley League for a reason: Westlake Village Oaks Christian did its part to remain in the hunt for a title, or at least a share of it, by defeating Ojai Nordhoff, 42-6, to force a three-way tie atop the Tri-Valley League standings. Oak Park had little trouble disposing of Santa Paula, 44-15, to position itself for a piece of the championship heading into the last week of play.

Down to the wire: Oxnard was able to stay focused on the task at hand, defeating Camarillo, 28-7, to extend its winning streak to seven games and move into sole possession of first place in the Pacific View League. However, Oxnard Pacifica, currently a game behind, looms next week and would like nothing more than to pull off the upset and earn a share of the title.
